The Oxfordshire County Council are involved with an ongoing battle. They are trying to do everything they can to save the Thames Bridge because it would appear that there are some HGV drivers who are taking their vehicles across it, even though they are above the weight restriction. Over 1,300 HGVs have ignored the weight restriction and some of them cross over it multiple times on the same day. Hundreds of breaches have happened since the weight restriction letters were sent out and there has also been an ongoing investigation too. Vehicles that are over 18 tonnes are not allowed to cross the bridge and although there were road signs put up, it looks like drivers were choosing to ignore them. Sure, drivers are now being caught out and they are also being made to pay fines, but either way, there are still vehicles that choose to pass over the bridge and all of this activity is damaging the historic landmark that the council are trying so hard to protect.
